You can consider it, but all type of investment is depends on timing, only buy when the market is really recovering from the low, sometime will kena tipu by market cos the market only looks like recovering but actually it is still a bear, please don't only refer to the KLCI index, normally is being push up one.

I have lost money in mutual fund (overseas type) when I bought it on April 2008, it seems like really low, but it went lower until 2009, and until now the fund still didn't recover back to the level when I bought, so every type of investment is depends on timing. If you want to invest for long term, you may average it. And must know when to go in and when to make parking. Please also do some study in stock market, as they are related.

This was put forward during a share-idea session;

1. buy 50k units of stock.
2. sell 10% and consider proceed as income for that month.
3. wait for remainder 90% to appreciate and level of 10% taken earlier.
4. either sell and proceed to next stock or keep for top-off.

sounds workable to me... what do you guys think?

Unit trust cannot buy onelah, u'll lost all ur money there.
Unit trust is a short term investment, not for long term.

If u keep too long, all your unit will be eaten by fund manager in no time.
I try before, never earn anything there.
Lucky i sold off my units that time, if not i lost all.

I doubt any forummers here are into unit trust. Many reasons:

1. Commission too high.
2. No control on which counter to buy/sell.
3. Dividends paid subject to tax.
4. Index up, unit trust moves slowly, index down, unit drops just as fast.
5. Presently index is high and not a good time to enter. A friend of mine bought 150K of trust in Oct 07 and by Oct 08 it was worth 80K.
6. Most importantly, unit trust salesmen are all conman. They work on commission.

I don't buy unit trust but my company does invest partly in mutual fund and overall it is better than putting into FD. But still you need a professional to handle the account to make a good profit. well range around 4%-25% (depends on time of entry and time to unload).

When you asking this question, i guess you already have the answer. And when this kind of question raise, you already doubt in your investment abilities. Asking a point of view from others won't suit into your investment decision. Because everyone have different strategies, investment style, timing of investment return and etc. Mutual fund and equity market is very similar. Only different is their rules.

As before you want to put any investment in equity market, ask yourself... What is your plan and rules to fit into your decision making. And last importantly ask yourself, were you disciplined enough to follow your rules? .

If you don't know what I'm talking about here is because you simply not ready yet. But don't lose hope. Put some effort to learn more about every investments. And by the time you almost learn it, the answer you need most will come out surprisingly. Time is gold, you are not late to learn it now. Wealth and fortune will shine upon you soon :cash:. Good Luck mate.  ;)

My own investing journey:

From a * investor, to a not so knowledgeable investor, to a more knowledgeable investor, to a better investor and to a intelligent investor.

In my early years, my money was in FDs, government sponsored mutual funds, an asset to live in and some stocks, recommended by my good experienced friend who is 20 years older than me.

Over time, with better knowledge and understanding of asset valuation and market fluctuations, my portfolio is now much bigger and diversified over different asset classes.  Within the equity class, the portfolio is concentrated to a few carefully selected stocks.  One of these stocks is actually a closed ended fund.

Certain convictions I have:

Over a long time, the stock market should go up.  Carefully selected company should grow its business over time, it will be a bigger company in 10 years time or 20 years time.

Don't be scarred of market volatility, make this your friend.

Always stay with good quality company (earning power, economic moat, franchise value, durable competitive advantage,  strong free cash flows, management with integrity, considerate to shareholders, good at allocating capital) as these will deliver values consistently over time.

Stay within your circle of competence ... and never get out of this.

If you were to invest in funds,  take also a long term view.  Probably stay with a low cost index fund  ..... for a LONG term.  You will be a winner if you did not invest at the time when the market is obviously in a bubble.  As to how much return you will get, that is variable... but it will be positive with a high degree of probability.
