M'sian bank union plans roadshow over pay spat
By S JAYASANKARAN IN KUALA LUMPUR
IN another display of public anger over the rising cost of living, the National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) threatened to embark on a roadshow to highlight the widening income gap between clerical workers and management at Malayan Banking, the country's largest bank.
The union upped the ante by adding that the popularity of the administration of Prime Minister Najib Razak was waning because of inflation and cost of living issues. Its gripe with Mr Najib was, apparently, because its persistent complaints to the premier had fallen on deaf ears.
J Solomon, the secretary general of the union said yesterday that NUBE, which represents over 30,000 clerical staff in the banking sector, had no choice but to hold the roadshow after Mr Najib's silence over its pay dispute with Maybank.
The dispute illustrates the growing frustration of Malaysia's lower middle class over the rising cost of living at a time when the premier has been touting the virtues of a high-income economy.
On another level, it also underlines the fact that Mr Najib's administration is a relatively weak one politically, and one that has the possibility of being replaced at the next general election. It is doubtful if statements like that of Mr Solomon's would have been heard during the tenure of, say, Mahathir Mohamad.
Indeed, Mr Solomon made no bones about his union's grouses. 'The silence of the prime minister to act on complaints against Maybank, a government-linked company (GLC), will not endear him to the public,' he said in a statement.
The unionist warned that the alleged exploitation of workers and the undermining of trade union rights by Maybank would have a direct impact on bank workers and could spread to all Malaysian workers if such practices are not stopped. NUBE has been in dispute with Maybank over bonuses since June 2009.
The union is seeking an 80-month bonus for its members based on the rationale that NUBE members should receive the same eight-month bonus that the bank's senior managers and contract officers had been receiving annually for the past 10 years.
Mr Solomon upped the ante by dragging in the premier. He said that the Najib administration's growing unpopularity could be attributed to the 'yawning gap' between the rich and the poor, rapidly rising inflation and the exploitation of workers by large corporations.
'With massive anti-union activities, reduced rights and diminishing real income levels, Malaysians are frustrated and this feeling is boiling over,' he said.
