Zelan sure of better results if no penalty
Engineering, construction and property developer, Zelan Bhd, is confident of better results this financial year if it can avoid paying penalty for the delay in the construction of the power plant in Indonesia.
Executive chairman, Datuk Anwar Aji, said the company was still "in discussions" with the owner of the project, Perusahaan Lestrik Negara Indonesia, and was confident of being able to avoid paying the penalty.
"If that (penalty) can be avoided and we secure one or two projects, then I think there's no problem to turn around the company. However, if that cannot be avoided, it may take a longer time," he told a media briefing after the company's annual general meeting today.
He said the penalty could cost Zelan US$57 million (US$1 = RM3.11) and the company has set aside a provision of RM97.1 million.
Anwar did not deny the possibility of the company seeking the assistance from the government to negotiate with Indonesian government on the matter if the current discussion were to reach a stalemate.
Both parties had agreed not to bring the issue to arbitration.
On the RM400 million Gombak Integrated Transport Terminal, he said, the company would sign the contract soon.
He said the company has also bid for a few contracts.
However, he did not reveal the amount.
Anwar said building material prices, together with labour shortage, would continue to be major challenges to the construction industry.
He said if the building material prices were regulated, they would stabilise and this would help construction companies.

I heard from someone (attended the AGM) that it's not good. All revenue recognized first, then only start recognize expenses in their accounting. The auditor (PWC) was goreng to answer it.

but wat i'm interested about zelan, it's Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar baby..u know it, i also know it.
moving fwd, mmc will inject more project to ensure biz continuANity of zelan...i know someof it. u guys might know too..but it's very descreet to tell now..

I think Zelan will be PN 17 .. eventually... Tan sri is a shrewd businessman .. and he is one businessman who puts his ego aside. Therefore, I don't think he will inject $$$ to save his company ...
I could be wrong but only time will tell ... for me .. I am staying away from zelan.

Zelan Berhad (“Zelan”) has, on 2 November 2011, received a letter from the Public Private Partnership Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department, stating that the Government has selected Zelan as the successful bidder to implement the development of the Centre for Foundation Studies (Phase 3), International Islamic University Malaysia, Gambang Campus in Pahang by way of Private Finance Initiative (PFI), subject to terms and conditions to be agreed upon and the relevant agreement to be executed between the Government and Zelan.
Zelan has on the same day issued its written confirmation to the Government that it accepts the above offer.
This announcement is dated 2 November 2011.
