PETALING JAYA: A subsidiary of loss-making oil and gas service provider SAAG Consolidated (M) Bhd has clinched a multi-million deal to build houses in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, said sources close to the company.
The contract, worth more than RM600mil, was awarded to SAAG’s India-listed subsidiary SAAG RR Infra Ltd and its German technology partners to build 60,000 “solar-powered affordable homes”.
SAAG RR’s technology partner for the project is Deutsche Composite GMBH. It is not clear what SAAG’s actual portion of the contract is or the margins from this project.
SAAG RR would also have the rights to manufacture, assemble and sell composite panels for the houses, the sources said.
The project would be funded by the Tamil Nadu government and construction works were expected to start by the year-end, the sources said.
Approximately 180,000 rupees (RM11,112) will be allocated for the construction of each house, measuring 300 sq ft, and for the purchase of a solar-powered home lighting system. All the houses will also have a rainwater harvesting system.
Sources also said the state government would be forking out about RM650mil for the construction of the houses.
“The chief minister was happy with the way the model solar-powered houses were built. Each house will have five solar-powered lights made of fibre glass and will have a kitchen area. It takes three days to build one house. These houses also come with a lifetime warranty,” explained the source.
A check on the Deutsche Composite Group website shows the company is in the business of creating new housing concepts using the world’s fastest energy-saving composite construction material, RexWall.
Headquartered in Germany, the RexWall team designs, develops, manufactures and installs residential and commercial buildings with the main focus on floating systems and low-cost construction.
Its main ingredient is its patent pending Fiber Composite Panel System or FCP and bonding material under the brand of RexWall.
SAAG posted losses in its last two financial years.
For its second quarter to June 30, 2011, the company posted a net loss of RM14.1mil versus a profit of RM1.98mil in the corresponding quarter the previous year.
Revenue dropped to RM10.93mil from RM43.1mil.
Cumulatively, SAAG recorded net loss of RM21.95mil from a profit of RM6.88mil.
The company is also in the midst of implementing a rights issue. The exercise involves restructuring of debts and the company is in advanced negotiations.
As of June 30, the company had short-term interest-bearing borrowings of RM486.75mil and long-term interest-bearing borrowings of RM236.9mil.
The company hoped to complete the exercise by the end of this year, the sources said.
