MD: Pintaras can do wide range of work
Below are excerpts from StarBiz's interview with Pintaras Jaya Bhd founder and managing director Dr Chiu Hong Keong.
HOW do you get your jobs?
We never have to advertise. If you want to build something, you will appoint consultants. And if your consultant is reasonably good, he will know of us. So we will get invited generally.
There are some that call for tenders but a lot is through word of mouth. There are just a handful of contractors in this line.
Is your order book short term in nature?
Generally piling work takes three to nine months. This is one of the reasons why analysts do not like us.
I can only tell I have six months of work because that is the nature of our business and analysts worry a bit when they can't see earnings visibility.
How would you describe visibility in your business judging by today's environment?
For me, I can look ahead a year and it is good. I cannot worry about things that will happen in two years because it is meaningless to me. It is an advantage in some ways as the company would not get too burdened by higher material costs.
We are able to go through the lean spells because we don't have any borrowings or leasing. My equipment is all paid for. If you look at our track record, you can see we are very versatile. Even when construction was tough, we went and did other types of work. We can do a wide range of construction work.
What about venturing beyond Malaysia?
We get many inquiries from the Middle East. There is a lot of piling work there but we are pretty busy here.
What about the company's investments in securities?
In 1997, we had a lot of cash, interest rates were high and the company enjoyed high interest income. But after the financial crisis, interest rates plunged and so did interest income.
We wondered what to do with our money and then we bought the manufacturing company. We still had extra money and it was earning a miserable interest rate.
Then we decided to go and invest with professional managers. Since then it has become quite sizeable.
(Pintaras has more than RM30mil invested with three fund managers. Over the years, Chiu said, returns had been more than a double-digit percentage per annum.)

KUALA LUMPUR: Shares of Pintaras Jaya Bhd had their biggest one-day jump in almost five months yesterday after the piling specialist posted its best ever net profit.
Interest in the stock may have also been spurred by company insiders' persistent buying, namely its chairman and managing director Dr Chiu Hong Keong, its filings to Bursa Malaysia showed.
Pintaras shares jumped 5.5 per cent, or 12 sen, to RM2.32 yesterday. This is its biggest single day jump since April 6. The stock has gained 22 per cent so far this year, doing better than the broader market's 3.3 per cent fall over the same period.
The group made a net profit of RM32.46 million for the year to June 30 2011, a 57 per cent jump from the year before. Revenue was also 19 per cent higher to RM126 million. This is its best profit since the group was set up in 1989.
It decided to declare a full-year dividend of 19 sen a share, better than the 15 sen for 2010.
Pintaras' results were mainly driven by its construction and manufacturing divisions. The group thinks it can do better for 2012.
"This is in view of the existing strong order book, the numerous tenders submitted and the anticipated implementation of more construction projects under the Economic Transformation Programme," it said in its financial announcement.
Pintaras is well known for its solid balance sheet. It has no debt and cash and short-term investments of RM101.7 million as at June 30.
Bursa Malaysia filings also showed that Chiu has been buying Pintaras shares since the start of this month.
He has bought 209,000 shares over six days, raising his indirect stake, via Pintaras Bina Sdn Bhd, to 43.68 per cent from 43.5 per cent before.
Chiu also has a direct stake of 14.25 per cent.
