NEW DELHI: India's Supreme Court ordered telecoms licences issued under a scandal-tainted 2008 sale be revoked, striking a decisive blow against corruption that plagues the country and roiling the world's No.2 cellular market.
The ruling applies to 122 licences held by eight operators but potentially affects fewer than 5% of users in a fiercely competitive market crowded with more than a dozen players.
Market leaders such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone, which last month scored a big win when the Supreme Court ruled it was not liable for US$2.2bil in tax, are poised to benefit from the ruling.
Also affected were Idea Cellular Ltd and Spice Communications Ltd whose nine and four licences respectively were obtained in 2008.
Malaysia's Axiata Bhd Group which has a stake in India's Idea Cellular and Spice when contacted yesterday said it was waiting for full details of the judgment.
“Axiata is unable to comment as we are waiting for the full details of the judgment,'' it said in a statement yesterday. Axiata shares closed six sen higher to RM4.73 yesterday

AXIATA Group Bhd's investments in India may see a rocky start to the Year of the Dragon after India's top court ordered the government to cancel 122 cellphone licences granted to companies during an irregular sale of spectrum in 2008.
Idea Cellular Ltd, which Axiata has a 19.7 per cent stake in it, said that the company's operations are somewhat hurt by the court's decision. The decision may reduce up to 4 per cent of Idea's revenue.
The company said it was one of the original mobile operators that had applied for nine new licences in 2006, long before the government took a decision to award the licences in 2008.
However, the court's decision means the nine licences, as well as four other licences it got as a result of the merger with Spice Telecom, are to be revoked.
The good news is that Idea may be allowed to continue operations for the next four months, until new auctions are conducted.
"It is unfortunate that a serious incumbent operator like Idea Cellular is being made to suffer due to this cancellation of licences, despite being fully compliant at each stage of the licence allocation process.
"As per information available from the media, we understand that the licence holders are allowed to continue operations for the next four months and auctions will be conducted for these licences within this period.
"We will study in detail the Supreme Court judgement and explore all possibilities to protect our investments," Idea Cellular said in a press statement
