tried Alexandra's course from Snap Academy and the rest was history. It's simple and eye-opening. The course allows me to focus on proper angles and start seeing what I really needed. Highly recommended the course.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s economy is expected to go through more pain this year as growth slows significantly due to decelerating exports and ongoing institutional reforms, according to UBS Investment Bank.

Its senior economist Edward Teather said the local economy is expected to endure more “pain” this year before seeing a gain in 2020.

Meanwhile, the ringgit is expected to trade at 4.4 against the US dollar in 2019, as poor trade data has typically exerted downward pressure on currencies for open economies such as Malaysia, said Teather.

KUALA LUMPUR: Defendants Fox Entertainment Group LLC, Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp and FoxNext LLC (Fox) have filed a US$46.4mil (RM191.7mil) counter claim against Genting Malaysia Bhd (GenM) for breach of contract at the US District Court, Central District of California.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia yesterday, GenM said Fox, together with Twenty First Century Fox Inc (21CF) and The Walt Disney Company also filed a reply to the lawsuit initiated by the company in November last year.

Fox, in the counter claim, is demanding US$46.4mil in respect of annual licence fees, guarantee amounts or royalties and travel reimbursements pursuant to a Memorandum of Agreement dated June 1, 2013, as well as consequential damages, reasonable costs and other relief under applicable law.

GENM added it was in the process of reviewing the above with its legal counsels and intends to file a timely response. The company would make any necessary announcements in relation to the above matter when appropriate or once there is further material development.

At the close of the trading yesterday, GENM was down by 2 sen to RM3,26.

PETALING JAYA: FGV Holdings Bhd has finalised the composition of its top management team with the appointment of Datuk Haris Fadzilah Hassan as the new group chief executive officer (CEO) effective yesterday.

The diversified plantation group also welcomed three new senior management members – Datuk Mohd Hairul Abdul Hamid, Mazri Abdul Rahim and Dr Christina Ooi Su Siang.

Mazri joined FGV Group as chief human resources (HR) officer on Nov 19 last year, followed by Mohd Hairul as group chief financial officer (CFO) on Jan 2 and Ooi, who came in as chief procurement officer on Jan 15.

FGV chairman Datuk Wira Azhar Abdul Hamid told StarBiz that “the group is now ready to function as a complete organisation in terms of its businesses and leadership with the completion of its top management line-up”.

Azhar, who had to step in as FGV interim CEO following the resignation of Datuk Zakaria Arshad as group president and CEO back in September last year, will now relinquish his interim post with Haris coming on board.

“I will gladly return to my official duty as chairman and focus on my special project that involves the operation of Asian Plantations Ltd, which FGV acquired in 2014,” he added.

Azhar also said, “As a listed company, FGV has the responsibility to its shareholders to create and deliver value.

“The Transformation Plan that we have put in place today sets the direction for the company and our management team, led by Haris, will drive FGV forward. I have full confidence in their ability to deliver results.”

Haris comes to FGV with 28 years of experience in the corporate sector, especially in strategy and change management. Most recently, he was director of commercial and land management in Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp). Prior to MRT Corp, Haris had worked in the plantation industry in various leadership roles, first with Golden Hope Plantations Bhd as head of strategy and business development, and subsequently with Sime Darby Plantation Bhd as head of its downstream operations.

Azhar noted that Haris’ years of experience in the plantation industry and his expertise in change management are crucial skillsets to drive FGV’s transformation plan and deliver on aggressive targets that have been set by the board.

Haris has a master of business administration from the University of Miami in the United States with a double major in international business management and management information systems.

Mohd Hairul, an accountant by training, has several years of experience in effective financial and tax management, having served most recently as CFO in MRT Corp.

Mazri, meanwhile, has served in the area of HR for various multinationals throughout his career, which included postings in Europe and Asean. He has served fast-moving consumer goods manufacturers in several areas, including HR operations, compensation and benefits and organisational development.

As for Ooi, she brings to FGV more than two decades of procurement management experience, notably in procurement transformation management, another critical part of FGV’s recovery and transformation plan.

Yesterday, FGV shares closed eight sen higher or 8.96% to RM1.01 per share – the highest since Nov 28 last year.

This reflects the growing confidence among investors in the current aggressive management changes and strategic business transformation plan led by Azhar and his team to turn around the loss-making group.

The share price of FGV has been on the rise since Azhar wrote a seven-page letter to its shareholders on Jan 15 explaining in detail the plans the group would undertake, including selling part of its RM350mil non-core assets, improving returns from its plantation assets and the appointment of a new CEO.

KUALA LUMPUR: Fox Entertainment Group LLC, Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp and FoxNext LLC (Fox) have filed a US$46.4 million (RM192.1 million) counterclaim against Genting Malaysia Bhd’s suit against them for breach of contract at the US District Court, Central District of California.

In a bourse filing yesterday, Genting Malaysia said Fox, together with Twenty First Century Fox Inc (21CF) and The Walt Disney Company also filed a reply to the lawsuit initiated by the casino and resort operator in November last year.

In its counterclaim, Fox is asking for US$46.4 million in respect of annual licence fees, guarantee amounts or royalties and travel reimbursements pursuant to a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) dated June 1, 2013, as well as consequential damages, reasonable costs and other relief under applicable law.

The MoA was entered between Genting Malaysia and Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising, a division of Fox Entertainment Group Inc, whereby the group was granted a licence to utilise certain intellectual property rights associated with Fox theatrical motion pictures in connection with the design, development, construction and operation of what was to be called the Twentieth Century Fox World theme park under the Genting Integrated Tourism Plan.

Genting Malaysia said it is in the process of reviewing the counter claim with its legal counsels and intends to file a timely response.

Its legal proceedings in the same US district Court against Fox, 21CF and Disney is for breach of contract, and breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing. The group is claiming damages of over US$1 billion following the termination of the MoA by Fox.

Genting Malaysia slipped two sen or 0.61% to close at RM3.26 yesterday, for a market capitalisation of RM18.37 billion.

NEW YORK: U.S. oil prices rose by 1 percent on Thursday, boosted by the U.S. threat of sanctions on Venezuela, but gains were capped by record high gasoline inventories and an unexpected big build in crude stocks in the United States.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose 51 cents to settle at $53.13 a barrel, a 0.97 percent gain. Brent crude futures fell 5 cents to settle at $61.09 a barrel.

Washington signaled it could impose sanctions on Venezuela's crude exports as Caracas descends further into political and economic turmoil. The threat to reduce supplies supported futures prices.

The United States, the top importer of Venezuelan crude, is seeking to ensure that the OPEC member's oil revenue goes to opposition leader Juan Guaido, who swore himself in as interim president, and to cut off money from President Nicolas Maduro, a top U.S. official said on Thursday.

\"The breakdown in diplomatic relations was interpreted as upping the possibility of a U.S. sanction on Venezuelan oil that would likely force U.S. refiners to seek alternative supplies at higher prices, hence the WTI gains,\" Jim Ritterbusch, president of Ritterbusch and Associates, said in a note.

Venezuelan oil is predominantly heavy crude, which requires extensive refining. It is frequently blended with lighter crudes to give refiners higher-value products.

With Iran already crippled by U.S. sanctions, a drop in Venezuelan exports could squeeze global supply further.

Geneva-based Petro-Logistics said on its website that Iranian crude and condensate exports in December \"fell steeply\" from November to less than 1 million barrels per day (bpd) due to U.S. sanctions - lower than some other estimates.

Both Brent and WTI are both backed by light, sweet crudes, and are not directly linked to Venezuelan oil.

But concern about the supply of heavy crudes is apparent in the U.S. physical market, where the price for Mars Sour, a medium crude, shot to its highest since early 2011.

Two of the world's biggest commodities trading houses, Glencore and Mercuria Energy Group, predict more oil price volatility in coming months due to concerns about supplies from Venezuela and Iran.

ANEMIC U.S. GASOLINE DEMAND

Weighing on oil futures, U.S. crude inventories sharply rose by 8 million barrels last week, the Energy Information Administration said on Thursday, versus forecasts for a decline of 42,000 barrels.

Gasoline stocks rose for the eighth straight week to a record 259.7 million barrels, as demand for the motor fuel over the past four weeks fell 0.1 percent from a year ago. [EIA/S]

\"The report was rather bearish, punctuated by the large crude oil inventory increase,\" said John Kilduff, partner at Again Capital Management. \"Gasoline demand remains anemic.\"

Worries about the longer-term outlook for global economic growth, and therefore demand for crude, has pressured oil prices. Persistent concerns about the U.S-China trade war as well as slower world growth forecasts have kept investors wary. - Reuters

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian palm oil futures hit their highest in nearly five months on Thursday on expectations of falling production.

The benchmark palm oil contract for April delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange was up 0.6 percent at 2,297 ringgit ($554.94) a tonne at the close of trade, its fifth straight session of gains.

It earlier hit 2,298 ringgit, its highest level since Sept. 5, 2018. Trading volumes stood at 19,894 lots of 25 tonnes each at the close of trade.

\"Palm is up on lower production (expectations) and short-covering, and tracking overnight soyoil (on the Chicago Board of Trade),\" a Kuala Lumpur-based futures trader said.

\"The technical outlook is positive for palm.\"

Palm oil production in January is expected to fall from the month before, in line with the seasonal trend. Production dropped 2 percent to 1.81 million tonnes in December.

Meanwhile, the Chicago March soybean oil contract rose 1.1 percent on Wednesday, in line with gains in U.S. soybean futures and on worries of poor crop weather reducing yield potential in South America.

Soybean oil prices were last trading flat at 1040 GMT.

In other related oils, the May soybean oil contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange rose 0.3 percent, and the Dalian January palm oil contract gained 0.6 percent.

Palm oil prices are impacted by movements in soyoil rates, as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oil market.

Palm oil may rise more into a range of 2,304-2,322 ringgit, as it has cleared a resistance at 2,274 ringgit per tonne, said Wang Tao, a Reuters market analyst for commodities and energy technicals.

PETALING JAYA: MyEG Services Bhd will appeal against the daily penalty of RM7,500 imposed on it by the Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) for abusing its market position in the provision and management of online foreign workers’ permit renewal.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the e-government services provider said it would file an appeal to the Court of Appeal after the KL High Court upheld MyCC’s decision under Section 10(2)(d)(iii) of the Competition Act 2010 for abusing its dominant position.

Bernama reported that in dismissing the judicial review application by MyEG, High Court Judge Datuk Azizah Nawawi agreed with the Competition Appeal Tribunal’s findings that reaffirmed MyCC’s decision that MyEG had abused its dominant position by imposing different conditions in equivalent transactions in the purchase of mandatory insurance for the renewal of the Pas Lawatan (Kerja Sementara) for foreign workers.

“Consequently, MyEG was ordered to pay a penalty of RM9.337mil in total for such infringement, which includes a penalty of RM307,200 and daily penalties from Oct 7, 2015 to Jan 22, 2019 amounting to RM9.03mil.

“MyEG is still liable for a daily penalty of RM7,500 per day until it complies with the directives imposed by MyCC in its decision,” MyCC said in a statement.

MyEG said following the dismissal of its judicial review by the High Court, “we will be filing for a stay in the daily penalty and we will be filing an appeal to the Court of Appeal immediately.”

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 24): Based on corporate announcements and news flow today, companies that may be in focus on Friday (Jan 25) may include: Tropicana Corp Bhd, MyEG Services Bhd, CIMB Group Holdings Bhd, TMC Life Sciences Bhd, Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd, Genting Malaysia Bhd, DiGi.com Bhd and Caring Pharmacy Group Bhd.

Tycoon Tan Sri Danny Tan Chee Sing, founder and major shareholder of Tropicana Corp Bhd with a 63.56% stake, has returned to the helm of the property developer as executive vice chairman after a three-and-a-half-year hiatus.

Additionally the group said Chee Sing has injected what is left of his land bank worth RM1.85 billion into Tropicana.

The land bank, amounting to 1,116.88 acres under 12 real estate holding companies, are located in the Klang Valley and Johor, and has a potential gross development value (GDV) of RM24.82 billion.

MY E.G. Services Bhd (MyEG) will be filing an appeal to the Court of Appeals against the High Court’s judgment to uphold the Malaysia Competition Commission’s (MyCC) decision to slap a penalty of RM9.34 million on the e-government services provider for abusing its dominant position.

"We will be filing for a stay in the daily penalty and we will be filing an appeal to the Court of Appeals immediately," it said, adding that it had complied with the requirements to make changes to the user flow on the website as per MyCC’s request.

MyCC announced earlier today that the Kuala Lumpur High Court had, on Jan 22, upheld the commission's decision on June 24, 2016 to penalise MyEG and its wholly-owned subsidiary MYEG Commerce Sdn Bhd for infringing the Competition Act 2010.

CIMB Group Holdings Bhd said it plans to enter into the investment banking market in the Philippines, after its wholly-owned unit CIMB Group Sdn Bhd received yesterday the relevant approvals from the Securities and Exchange Commission of the Philippines to establish its investment banking business there.

CIMB's unit will be operating its investment banking business in the Philippines via a 60% shareholding in CIMB Bancom Capital Corp; the remaining 40% stake in CIMB Bancom will be held by local partners — Bancom II Consultants Inc and PLP Group Holdings Inc.

TMC Life Sciences Bhd’s net profit rose 11.7% to RM7.07 million for the first financial quarter ended Nov 30, 2018 (1QFY19) from RM6.34 million a year ago, on higher patient load, higher intensity cases handled and additional consultants recruited. Quarterly revenue also grew 13% to RM47.16 million from RM41.73 million a year ago.

Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd has bagged two contracts worth RM165 million to supply noise barriers for installation along the Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) and the Damansara-Shah Alam Elevated Expressway (DASH).

It accepted the award of the contracts from Permodalan Nasional Bhd's (PNB) indirect wholly-owned subsidiary Turnpike Synergy Sdn Bhd. The contracts are scheduled to commence by the end of this month, with completion expected in the first quarter of 2021.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court here has granted Genting Malaysia Bhd (GENM) leave to commence judicial review proceedings against the Ministry of Finance's (MoF) decision in December 2017 to amend the tax incentive approval it gave in 2014.

In December 2014, the MoF had granted tax incentives for the Genting Integrated Tourism Plan (GITP), which among others, entitled GENM to claim for income tax exemption equivalent to 100% of qualifying capital expenditure incurred for a period of 10 years.

However, the Ministry decided in 2017 to amend the tax incentive approval given, which effectively prolongs the utilisation period of the tax allowances “significantly”.

DiGi.com Bhd saw a 4.9% net profit growth in its fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2018 (4QFY18) to RM377.8 million, from RM360.08 million a year ago, which it attributed to a solid postpaid growth and efficient cost management.

Revenue for the quarter under review grew 1.8% to RM1.67 billion from RM1.64 billion a year ago.

It declared a fourth interim dividend of 4.8 sen per share, payable on March 29.

For the full year, DiGi's net profit rose 4.3% to RM1.54 billion from RM1.48 billion in FY17, while revenue grew 2.9% to RM6.53 billion from RM6.34 billion.

Caring Pharmacy Group Bhd recorded a 34.3% year-on-year surge in net profit for the second quarter ended Nov 30, 2018 (2QFY19), to RM5.74 million, on the back of higher margins and commendable sales at its new and existing outlets.

Revenue grew 12.8% to RM139.3 million from RM123.45 million in 2QFY18, contributed by sales generated from its 10 new outlets, as well as higher sales from its existing pharmacies.

For the cumulative six-month period, net profit grew 30.6% to RM9.83 million, against RM7.53 million in the year-ago period, while revenue expanded 13.5% to RM282.24 million from RM248.7 million.

KUALA LUMPUR: Tycoon Tan Sri Danny Tan Chee Sing, founder and major shareholder of Tropicana Corp Bhd with a 63.56% stake, is back at the helm of the property developer as executive vice chairman after a three-and-a-half-year hiatus.

Chee Sing, 64, had announced his retirement from the day-to-day management of Tropicana, which he founded in 1979, in June 2015.

At the same time, Top Glove Corp Bhd founder and executive chairman Tan Sri Lim Wee Chai, 61, who holds a 10.296% stake in Tropicana, has been redesignated from non-executive deputy chairman to non-executive chairman of the group.

Chee Sing is the father of Datuk Dickson Tan Yong Loong and Dion Tan Yong Chien, who are the deputy group chief executive officer and group managing director of Tropicana respectively.

The appointments come as Chee Sing injects into the group, what is left of his privately-owned land bank worth RM1.85 billion — representing a 17.9% discount as compared to the indicative market value.

The land bank of 1,116.88 acres (451.98ha) under 12 real estate holding companies are located in the Klang Valley and Johor, with the potential gross development value (GDV) of RM24.82 billion.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia yesterday, Tropicana said under the deal, RM343.7 million of the total RM1.85 billion will be satisfied via the issuance of 286.5 million new redeemable convertible preference shares (RCPS) in Tropicana at an issue price of RM1.20.

The remaining RM1.51 billion for debt settlement will be satisfied via RM247.1 million cash, issuance of 823.7 million RCPS at an issue price of RM1.20 and assumption of Chee Sing’s bank borrowings amounting to RM271.8 million.

Tropicana is also proposing to enter into joint ventures (JVs) with Cenang Resort Sdn Bhd, Sinaran Ramah Sdn Bhd, Pantai Kok Resort Development Sdn Bhd, Suci Padu Sdn Bhd and Ibarat Indah Sdn Bhd to jointly develop four plots of land totalling 1,328.76 acres the five companies own in Pulau Langkawi and Pekan Nenas, Johor. The total estimated GDV for the proposed JV developments is RM6.7 billion.

Meanwhile, Tropicana said the proposed acquisitions are expected to facilitate the continuing growth of its core business as a property developer by increasing its existing land bank in Johor and Kuala Lumpur.

“In addition, the proposed acquisitions will mitigate potential conflict of business interests between Tropicana and its major shareholder (Chee Sing),” it added.

Tropicana noted that the strategic locations of the acquired land in Johor and Kuala Lumpur are expected to contribute positively to the group’s future earnings in the medium to long term as the group monetises the acquisition land.

The issuance of the RCPS as part of the purchase consideration and the debt settlement amount will enable the group to conserve its cash balance for the operations and expansion while minimising the potential impact on the cashflow and gearing of the group as opposed to full settlement in cash and/or via bank borrowings, it added.

The proposals are expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2019.

In a separate statement, Lim said: “In my role as chairman, I look forward to continuing to assist the group in many initiatives and efforts to deliver value to our shareholders, customers and other stakeholders. I am excited with this latest land injection which was independently valued by professionals.”

“Tropicana received a discount of 17.9% from market value on the lands and discount from revalued net asset value of the target companies. With the RCPS structure, the capital structure in the ownership of these strategic assets have been optimised. This will also align the interest of Tan Sri Danny Tan with Tropicana,” he added.

Chee Sing said upon completion of the latest corporate exercise will bring Tropicana’s total land bank to 2,243.93 acres with a combined GDV potential of RM71.42 billion.

“Additionally, through the JVs, Tropicana will have access to a further 1,328.76 acres with a GDV of RM6.7 billion. Thus, January 2019 will be the right time for me to return and pursue a full time role,” he added.

This is not the first time Chee Sing has injected his personal properties into Tropicana. In March 2012, Chee Sing injected 73 of his privately-held properties into the group, then known as Dijaya Corp Bhd, for RM948.7 million, making it one of the largest related-party transactions in Malaysia. The aim then was to turn Tropicana into a property developer comparable to its other large competitors such as Mah Sing Group Bhd and S P Setia Bhd.

The deal was satisfied by RM250 million cash and the issuance of a 10-year redeemable convertible unsecured loan stock.

More recently, on Sept 14 last year, the tycoon injected into the group, two plots of land totalling 329.1 acres in Johor, for RM49.05 million or RM40 per sq ft, representing an 11% discount to the indicative market value of RM45 per sq ft as opined by independent registered valuer Messrs C H Williams Talhar & Wong.

The transaction then saw an increase in Tropicana’s net and gross group gearing to 0.34 and 0.66 post-acquisition, from December 2017’s 0.27 and 0.56 respectively.

Tropicana shares closed down one sen or 1.13% at 87.5 sen yesterday, bringing a market capitalisation of RM1.29 billion. Over past one year, the stock price has fallen 4.9% from 92 sen.

In comparison, S P Setia’s market value stood at RM9.94 billion, while that of Mah Sing was at RM2.26 billion yesterday.

NEW YORK (Jan 25): The S&P 500 edged higher but the Dow closed nominally lower on Thursday as lingering anxieties about slowing global growth and unresolved trade disputes undercut a spate of strong earnings, while chipmakers rallied to give the Nasdaq a solid gain.

Fourth-quarter earnings continued to be generally positive, but U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross' comments that the United States and China were "miles and miles" from reaching a trade agreement curbed investor enthusiasm.

Chipmakers led the Nasdaq's rise, as Xilinx Inc and Lam Research Corp reported quarterly results that beat analyst expectations. Texas Instruments Inc, while posting better-than-expected profit, disappointed on revenue.

The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index, under pressure in recent months after Apple Inc warned of waning smartphone demand, was saw its biggest one-day percentage gain since Dec. 26, advancing 5.7 percent.

Still, even in the face of upbeat corporate results, fears surrounding tariffs and the longest federal government shutdown in history weighed on investors.

"What we're seeing is the positive of strong earnings being offset by the very rapidly rising political risks," said Oliver Pursche, vice chairman and chief market strategist at Bruderman Asset Management in New York. "There continues to be hope, but then the commerce secretary saying that we're miles apart on a China trade deal certainly negates that positive."

"Right now markets are going to stay in a relatively tight trading range until they get some news they can really digest and trade on," Pursche added. "There's no reason to sell but there's also no reason to buy."

Commercial air carriers American Airlines Group Inc, Southwest Airlines Co and JetBlue Airways Corp all reported quarterly earnings that surpassed consensus estimates amid growing pressures related to the government shutdown.

The S&P 500 Airlines index gained 3.3 percent.

Union Pacific Corp also reported earnings that surprised to the upside. The railroad operator, along with airlines and other companies, is a constituent of the closely watched Dow Jones Transportation index, ended the session up 1.1 percent.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 22.38 points, or 0.09 percent, to 24,553.24, the S&P 500 gained 3.63 points, or 0.14 percent, to 2,642.33 and the Nasdaq Composite added 47.70 points, or 0.68 percent, to 7,073.46.

Of the 11 major sectors of the S&P 500, all but consumer staples, healthcare and materials advanced.

Fourth-quarter reporting season is in full-swing. With nearly one-fifth of S&P 500 companies having reported, 75.3 percent have surpassed Street estimates. Analysts now see S&P profit growth of 14.2 percent for the quarter.

Shares of Textron Inc jumped 5.6 percent after beating analyst profit estimates and forecast better-than-expected 2019 profit.

PG&E Corp soared by 74.6 percent after the California utility was cleared of the 2017 Tubbs fire.

Mining company Freeport-McMoRan Inc slid 13.1 percent after missing fourth-quarter profit expectations due to falling copper prices.

Intel Corp fell in after-hours trading after reporting lower-than-expected fourth-quarter revenue due to weakening demand.

Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 2.15-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.64-to-1 ratio favored advancers.

The S&P 500 posted 9 new 52-week highs and 1 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 27 new highs and 36 new lows.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 6.94 billion shares, compared to the 7.88 billion average over the last 20 trading days.

NEW YORK: Oil prices edged higher on Friday as political turmoil in Venezuela threatened to tighten crude supply, but concerns over surging U.S. fuel stocks and global economic woes weighed on sentiment.

The United States signalled on Thursday it may impose sanctions on Venezuelan exports after recognising opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim president this week, prompting President Nicholas Maduro to cut ties with Washington.

But the ongoing U.S.-China trade dispute and broader gloom over world economic growth put a check on prices.

Brent crude oil futures ended the session at $61.64 a barrel, up 55 cents, or 0.9 percent. Brent, however, has shed about 1.7 percent since the start of trade on Monday and is on track to post its first week of losses in four weeks.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures settled at $53.69 per barrel, up 56 cents, or 1.05 percent. WTI futures fell about 0.2 percent on the week, also posting the first week of declines in four weeks.

RBC Europe predicted that U.S. sanctions could nearly double projected output shortfalls from Venezuela.

\"Venezuelan production will decline by an additional 300,000-500,000 barrels per day (bpd) this year, but such punitive measures could expand that outage by several hundred thousand barrels,\" it said.

Still, some analysts said the possibility of immediate sanctions were unlikely.

\"We view a blockade on Venezuelan imports as low probability and a last resort measure that is likely weeks if not months away should it materialize,\" Jim Ritterbusch, president of Ritterbusch and Associates, said in a note.

\"The evolving situation in Venezuela appears capable of delaying our expected test of $50 support.\"

OUTPUT SURGE

Global oil markets are still well supplied, however, thanks in part to a spike in U.S. output.

Record U.S. production would likely offset any short-term disruptions to Venezuelan supply due to possible U.S. sanctions, Britain's Barclays said in a note. The bank cut its 2019 average Brent forecast to $70 a barrel, from $72 previously.

U.S. energy firms this week increased the number of oil rigs operating for the first time this year. Drillers added 10 oil rigs in the week to Jan. 25, bringing the total count to 862, General Electric Co's Baker Hughes energy services firm said in its closely followed report on Friday. [RIG/U]

The output surge has swollen U.S. fuel stocks, and crude inventories rose by 8 million barrels last week, according to official data released on Thursday.

Refining profits for gasoline are crashing around the world as consumption stalls amid a huge wave of new supplies, resulting in record inventories in Asia, America and Europe.

In the U.S. market, gasoline margins sank to $5.70 per barrel on Thursday, the lowest seasonally since 2009, weighed down by weak demand for the fuel and excess supply.

Analysts have predicted a more balanced market due to a production cut pact by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies including Russia, as well as potential export disruptions in Venezuela, Iran and Libya.

\"While the current state of affairs is price constructive for oil, the market is hesitant when it comes to the global outlook,\" Harry Tchilinguirian, global head of commodity markets strategy at BNP Paribas, told the Reuters Global Oil Forum.

Demand may start to stutter because of a global economic slowdown, which is likely to dent fuel consumption.

A trade dispute between the United States and China and tightening financial conditions around the world have hurt manufacturing activity in most economies, including in China, where growth last year was the weakest in nearly 30 years.

According to Reuters polls of hundreds of economists worldwide, a synchronised global economic slowdown is underway and would deepen if the U.S.-China trade war escalated. - Reuters

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 25): Financial technology and business solutions provider, Orion IXL Bhd is targeting revenue contribution of 30-40 percent this year from its newly launched MyAzZahra system, developed for the cooperatives and member cooperatives of Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Bhd (ANGKASA).

MyAzZahra is an electronic online loan application system portal.

Orion group chief executive officer Mohamad Shaharul Mohamad Shariff said the portal, officially launched today, was expected to be utilised by at least 200,000 members of various cooperatives within the first year, with over RM1 billion worth of loans being processed in 2019 and growing to RM3 billion by 2020.

“The system will gradually digitise the whole services and products provided, including loan and salary deductions processes, enabling ANGKASA to boost the speed efficiency of processing loan applications and other services.

“Other cooperatives under ANGKASA can also utilise the portal if they would like to advertise their products and services,” he told reporters after the launch of the portal by Entrepreneur Development Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Yusof.

Mohamad Shaharul, who is also MyAngkasa Az Zahra Sdn Bhd director, said the portal plans to expand its services in the next two to three years to the business to business (B2B) segment in the second phase and have its own marketplace in the third phase.

The portal is expected to generate revenue of RM20 million to RM30 million this year, he added.

MyAngkasa Az Zahra is a special joint-venture (JV) company set up by MyAngkasa Holdings Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of ANGKASA, and Sukaniaga Sdn Bhd, an associate company of Orion, to undertake the MyAzZahra system project.

Sukaniaga holds a 75 per cent stake in the JV company while MyAngkasa owns the remaining 25 per cent.

As at June 30, 2018, ANGKASA, which comprises 14,094 cooperatives under its stable, has some 6.5 million members with total assets of RM140 billion and annual revenue of RM40.24 billion.
