Lee Chong Wei should change name to Lee Hsing Loong or something like that to boost his aura.

Once again, he was left singing the blues – for the fourth time – when the mighty Chen Long outplayed the Malaysian to defend the men’s singles title with an awesome 21-14, 21-17 win in a 65-minute final at the Istora Senayan in Indonesia.

Chong Wei finished with silver medals from 2011 (London) and 2013 (Guangzhou) championships. He had his silver medal stripped from the 2014 edition in Copenhagen after tested positive for dexamethasone.

When Chong Wei took the first point, it looked as though a closely-contested match was on the cards.

But Chen Long never really gave Chong Wei the time or room to settle down as he was superior in attack, defence and even controlled the game at the net.

Hardly making any mistakes, Chen Long grew confident and continued to torment Chong Wei to win 21-14.

In the second game, Chong Wei tried every trick in the book to break Chen Long’s dominant play but, unfortunately, nothing worked for him.

And it did not help that Chong Wei added to his own misery by making unforced errors to blow away his chance of becoming Malaysia’s first world badminton champion.

Chong Wei took his 12th defeat to the Chinese in his stride.

“I lost to an extraordinary player today. Chen Long was faster ... I could see the shuttles flying past me. He was in top form,” said Chong Wei, who also lost in similar fashion to Chen Long at the last year’s final in Copenhagen.

“I tried to increase my pace. I tried to attack, but all was not working. Once again, I have failed to fulfil my dream to become a world champion. It is disappointing.

“Those who watched the match today must have been disappointed as well. They ought to. It was not my best performance.”

Asked whether he would compete in the next World Championships in 2017, the 32-year-old Chong Wei said: “Honestly, I don’t know. If I stay injury free, why not. It all depends on my condition.”

Although disappointed, the two-time Olympic silver medallist has promised to bounce back. He now sets his eyes on the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

“No matter what I will not give up. I will come back stronger for the Olympics. I am not stopping. I am going to try again,” said Chong Wei.

“I have changed my game to counter Chen Long but it did not work today. I will change again and again until I get him,” added Chong Wei, who only returned to action in May after serving an eight-month ban for the positive dope test.

Malaysia failed to win a title but there were some positives to be taken from the World Championships.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) technical director Morten Frost was happy to see some inspiring performances by several shuttlers.

In the men's doubles, Tan Wee Kiong-Goh V Shem stunned defending champions Ko Sung-hyun-Shin Baek-cheol of South Korea in the second round.

Amelia Anscelly-Soong Fie Cho also performed beyond expectations, beating top seeds Misaki Matsutomoto-Ayaka Takahashi of Japan in the women’s doubles second round and Tee Jing Yi took one game from eventual champion Carolina Marin of Spain in the women’s singles second round.

Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying managed to progress to the third round after scoring an upset win over ninth seeds Reginald Lee Chun Hei-Chai Hoi Wah of Hong Kong in the mixed doubles.

"Our players from every department defeated higher-ranked players and to do so at the world meet is a good way forward," said Frost.

"We are not at where we used to be in world badminton but we are reviving it. The small breakthroughs at the worlds are a positive step,” added the Dane.

For Frost, he now hopes to see more positive results when the Malaysians gear up for the Vietnam Open Grand Prix in Ho Chi Minh City from Aug 24-30 and the two upcoming Superseries in Japan from Sept 9-12 and South Korea from Sept 15-20.

Lee Chong Wei has picked Zulfadli Zulkiffli as his successor.

The 32-year-old believes Zulfadli, a former world junior champion, has what it takes to reach the top in world badminton.

“But Zulfadli will only come good if he joins the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). He has done well in his first World Championships, but he has to look at the future,” said Chong Wei after returning home from the World Championships in Jakarta on Tuesday.

World No. 38 Zulfadli, who trains under his father Zulkiffli Sidek, made a strong run in Jakarta. He beat world No. 6 Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan 21-5, 22-20 in the first round before eventually bowing out in the third round.

For Chong Wei, he settled for his third silver in the championships after losing to China’s Chen Long in Sunday’s final.

“Zulfadli needs to know what he wants. If he stays on his own, this is as far as he’ll go.

“If he’s looking to win a medal at the World Championships or the Olympics, then he should consider joining the national team because he will definitely improve a lot more.

“Most of the top players are still with the BAM. He’ll get better sparring partners, training facilities, a better programme and more chances to shine.

“Zulfadli’s still only 22, but he’s already running out of time. Japan’s (Kento) Momota is still only 20 but he’s ranked No. 4 in the world and a semi-finalist at the World Championships,” said Chong Wei.

“I’ve failed again at the World Championships but I just have to keep going,” said Chong Wei.

“There have been some negative comments about me, but I accept it. Now, I hope to qualify for next year’s Rio Olympics. It will be my last Games.

“I have until May 1 next year to earn my ticket to Rio. In the next few months my focus is on earning ranking points.

“It’s definitely going to be a big challenge with Chen Long being the best in the world now while Momota, Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen and India’s K. Srikanth are also very strong.

“I will review my performances at the World Championships with my coaches Hendrawan and Morten (Frost) and prepare for my next tournaments at the Japan Open (Sept 8-13) and Korean Open (Sept 15-20),” said Chong Wei.

Chong Wei is now ranked No. 44 in the world, but he should break into the top 30 based on his results at the World Championships.
