Malaysia's World Cup qualifying Asian Zone Group A match against Saudi Arabia was halted before time after a group of supporters threw objects onto the pitch.

A group of fans known as Ultras Malaya launched flares and fireworks onto the pitch during the 87th minute.

Saudi were leading 2-1 at this point, with Malaysia's lone goal scored by Mohd Safiq Rahim in the 70th minute.

Some fireworks even reached the grandstand where fans were seated, causing them to run for cover.

At the same time, Saudi fans could be seen running to the exits. It is believed that there were some fans causing trouble in the stands.

The Ultras were apparently protesting against FAM after the 10-0 mauling by the United Arab Emirates last Thursday.

The match has been officially abandoned by match authorities.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin blamed the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and certain irresponsible fans for causing the match to be halted.

He said FAM had lost control of their own stadium, pointing the finger at poor stadium security.

"FAM lost control of their own stadium. Fans throwing flares were wrong. Both at fault tonight," Khairy said in a tweet, which was retweeted more than 3,000 times.

Several Saudi Arabian football fans claim they were attacked during the 2018 World Cup Qualifying Asian Zone Group A match at the Shah Alam Stadium Tuesday night.

The victims claimed they were attacked in the stands and outside the stadium.

The game was halted for crowd trouble in the 87th minute, with Saudi leading 2-1 at the time.

Some fans claimed they were attacked by several masked men armed with sticks.

Abdulrahman Himad, 23, from Yemen, injured his right ankle when he fell down while trying to evade the attackers.

"I did not expect this to happen. We came here to watch the game and this happened. I'm truly shocked. This is not Malaysia," said the student who was seen limping.

Mohammed Abu Obayda, 26, said he was attacked by a few men in the stands, and he ran out of the stadium.

"Security said things were under control outside, but as we stepped out, a few men with sticks attacked us.

"We panicked and ran back into the stadium," he said, adding that he was not injured.

The Saudi fans stayed back at a holding area in the stadium before they left on eight buses under police escort.

Police have arrested 11 football supporters for causing disturbance at the Malaysia's World Cup qualifying Asian Zone Group A match against Saudi Arabia.

The match was halted after a group of supporters threw objects onto the pitch.

A group of fans known as Ultras Malaya allegedly launched flares and fireworks onto the pitch during the 87th minute.

When asked if the 11 arrested were part of the Ultras Malaya, Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Shafien Mamat declined to comment.

He said police would investigate how the flares and fireworks were smuggled into the Shah Alam stadium.

"Based on how we conducted checks on those entering the stadium, it is quite impossible for them to bring in the items without anyone noticing.

"Maybe the items were smuggled into the stadium earlier. We will liaise with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and Shah Alam City Hall tomorrow the matter," he explained.

ACP Shafien also addressed allegations of assault on some Saudi Arabia supporters.

"So far, we haven't received any reports of assaults on Saudi Arabia supporters. An ambassador told me that no Saudi Arabia supporters were injured," he said, adding that police would investigate the allegations.

Saudi Arabia were leading 2-1 at this point, with Malaysia's lone goal scored by Mohd Safiq Rahim in the 70th minute.

The Ultras were apparently protesting against FAM after the 10-0 mauling by the United Arab Emirates last Thursday.

Children cried, people screamed, Saudi Arabia fans ran for their lives and players sought safety at the stadium tunnel.

It was a sight to forget for the Malaysian football scene as the Ultras Malaya fans showed their ugly side.

The game between Malaysia and Saudi Arabia on Tuesday night at Stadium Shah Alam began well. Many fans were scattered around the stadium. Malaysia was fighting to beat Saudi Arabia in the 2018 World Cup qualifying Asian Zone Group A match.

In the 41st minute, the scene dramatically changed. More than a thousand Ultras suddenly got up from where they were sitting and started marching to the back of the goal post where Malaysia would play from during the second half.

During the match, Malaysia scored in the 70th minute and all was still peaceful, although the Ultras were boisterous. The Saudis replied two minutes later and then took the lead in the 76th minute.

Chaos erupted in the 87th minute.

Suddenly, the Ultras threw flares into the pitch and running track. They also lobbed fireworks, rockets and smoke bombs.

Some projectiles zoomed just over the heads of policemen and press photographers. If the missiles had come just a little lower, they would have struck their bodies.

The scene was reminiscent of 2011 when Malaysia played Singapore at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

A fan lost his right eye after being struck by a firecracker then.

At the Shah Alam Stadium, two flares reached the stands and people got worried. Some had brought their families and were stunned by what was happening around them.

Now the children were crying, the men were shouting at the Ultras to stop and women were trying to get their children out of the stadium.

It did not end there. Another group, allegedly known as the “Casuals”, attacked Saudi Arabian fans in the away stand.

Police managed to stop them and told the Saudi fans to leave the stadium. But there were more Casuals waiting outside and the fans ran back inside, fearing for their lives.

One Saudi fan, who injured his leg, asked: “Is this really Malaysia?”

He had to stay in a “holding” area until police could bring the situation under control.

The Ultras Malaya and the Casuals should be ashamed of themselves over what happened. Now, Malaysia is doomed to play at least a few matches in empty stadiums.

Their behaviour was a self-defeating act. As bad as, or worse than, the 10-0 defeat the Malaysian team suffered to the UAE.

After Tuesday's fiasco, Selangor police have assured that this weekend's game between Selangor and Kelantan at Shah Alam Stadium will be incident free.

Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Shafien Mamat said police and the Shah Alam Municipal Council would be taking tougher measures on unruly fans during the Malaysia Cup match on Saturday.

He said certain items, that have become a staple among fans during football matches, will no longer be allowed into the stadium.

"I give an example, the drumsticks they use to beat the drums in the stadium, these can actually be used as weapons. So they will have to leave them outside before going in," he said.

Food vendors will also be screened now. Police will open a special entrance for vendors to have their products checked before they are allowed into the stadium.

"We are going to see football, let that be all. Let's not do anything else dangerous. Let us just watch football peacefully. Let what happened last week be a lesson," he said adding that the police had issued a letter to the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and the Football Association of Selangor (FAS) on their plans for this Saturday.

On Tuesday's incident, ACP Shafien conceded that there were weaknesses in the screening process of fans going into the stadium.

For instance, he said he noticed that Rela officers at the main gate leading into the VIP section of Shah Alam Stadium were not doing enough to screen and stop fans from going through.

"I was there and the weakness I saw was the Rela officers were just sitting at the gate that was unlocked. So when the people came and pushed open the gate, another 30 or 50 people managed to go in.

"We believe these people also brought in illegal items. But this Saturday we will be monitoring these gates," he said.

Selangor police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Samah Mat said police had set up a taskforce to probe the supplier of the flares and rockets used in Tuesday's game.

A group of fans known as Ultras Malaya allegedly threw flares and fireworks onto the pitch during the 87th minute forcing the referee to stop the game on Tuesday night.

Saudi Arabia were leading 2-1, with Malaysia's lone goal scored by Mohd Safiq Rahim in the 70th minute, when the match was abandoned 30 minutes later.

The Ultras were apparently protesting against FAM after the 10-0 mauling by the United Arab Emirates last Thursday.
