Fort  Detrick probe petition concludes with 25m signatures, inspires actions of Filipino think tank to break US 'wall of silence' around lab ~ 7 Aug 2021
  • As the US ramps up its information war against China on the coronavirus origins tracing to serve its intelligence-led 90-day inquiry on the issue, the Chinese public expressed themselves - 25m signed an online petition urging the WHO to probe the US' Fort Detrick biolab, which stores dangerous infectious viruses and had a leak record in 2019 right before the pandemic.
  • The loudest call on a probe into the Fort Detrick represented the wide public opinion. The Chinese petition, which a group of Chinese netizens drafted and entrusted the Global Times to post on social media, received half a million signatures in 24 hours and 1 million in 48 hours. It concluded on Aug 6, Friday 12pm after garnering 25m signatures in 3 weeks.

Exclusive: Prime Minister Suga on Chinese trade threats, Olympic moments ~ 11 Aug 2021

On what Japan can do to get China to play by the rules:
  • There are issues such as trade and competition over leading edge technology. So when it comes to these matters of concern in the international community, and [there are] differences of views, we have to work with the United States based on our relationship of trust. To try to address these concerns, it's very important for us to coordinate between allies and like-minded countries, especially in areas such as cyberattack and security. We need to work in coordination with each other to address these issues involving China.
On the move to subsidize some Japanese companies to relocate supply chains out of China and either back to Japan or southeast Asia:
  • Well, stable supply chains are something that is very important from a security perspective. We're not just trying to cut off China. But we're encouraging companies to relocate supply chains back to Japan. We're supporting them to do so as well as diversifying their supply chains from China to ASEAN countries.

China’s economic miracle is a myth made by exploitation of migrant workers ~ 5 Sep 2021
  • This is a labor market in a small town where more than 1,000 migrant workers gather every morning at 5:30 a.m. to look for job opportunities. Since last year, due to the trade war between the United States and China and the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies have shut down production, causing a large number of farmworkers to lose their jobs.
  • In particular, the strict lockdown system that followed the outbreak has caused a lot of inconvenience to their lives. Those who lost their jobs could not afford the high cost of living in the cities, so they returned to their hometowns to find odd or part-time jobs in the surrounding areas. Unfortunately, only about half of them are able to find a job every day.

Better data on Ivermectin is finally on its way ~ 8 Sep 2021
  • Ivermectin prescriptions spiked to nearly 100,000 in August, 20 times their pre-pandemic level.
  • At his online talk, put on by the National Institutes of Health, Mills’ slides told the tale: A relatively safe, familiar, cheap drug reduced the relative risk of mild Covid getting worse by nearly 30%.
  • The drug is fluvoxamine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor — an antidepressant. (It’s also an anti-inflammatory, and inflammation and an overreacting immune system are hallmarks of serious Covid infection, so that might be why it seems to help).
  • Get a bunch of people with Covid and randomize them into two groups; 739 get fluvoxamine and 733 get a placebo. Only 77 of the fluvoxamine-takers end up in the hospital; 109 of the placebo group do. This is exciting.

India's COVID cases dip sharply but fears of resurgence surface

Experts warn of another 'explosion' of infections as crowds hit streets

Kiran Sharma, Nikkei staff writer
June 18, 2021 13:33 JST

New Delhi -- With India witnessing a significant drop in COVID-19 infections and authorities easing lockdown restrictions, people have started thronging markets and train stations. Many can be seen defying social distancing rules, triggering fears that the country could face another serious wave of the pandemic.

From a high of over 400,000 daily cases in early May, when a deadly second wave of the pandemic ravaged the country, new infections have fallen below 100,000 per day recently. On Thursday, India posted 67,208 new cases, bringing its total caseload to 29.7 million with 381,903 fatalities.

New Delhi, the capital, was among the worst-hit regions in the country during the April to May surge. There were severe shortages of oxygen, medicines and hospital beds. With case numbers dropping, the city has gradually begun relaxing lockdown restrictions, allowing shopping malls and markets to reopen, and letting Metro trains and restaurants operate at 50% capacity.

Soon after the curbs were eased, video footage appeared on social media showing huge crowds of shoppers in Delhi and long lines of people waiting outside of Metro stations.

"Delhi's top mall saw a footfall of 19,000 people... as soon as it reopened," Ambrish Mithal, a senior doctor at a Max Healthcare hospital in New Delhi, tweeted on Tuesday, without naming the shopping complex. "Have we gone totally mad? "Wait for COVID-19 to explode again -- and blame the [government], hospitals [and the] country."

Arvinder Singh Soin, chairman of the Medanta Institute of Liver Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine, also took to Twitter to express his concern. "Delhi ought to have unlocked far more scientifically. We are inviting trouble!"

India's health ministry has advised people not to crowd markets and other places where movement restrictions have been lifted, to maintain social distancing and to wear face masks properly. "As we are opening up, our responsibility, our discipline become very, very important," V.K. Paul, the ministry's top adviser on COVID-19, told a media briefing.

Authorities in the capital, however, are already bracing for the possibility of another resurgence in cases, citing the example of the U.K., which is currently facing a potential third wave driven by the delta variant, which was first detected in India.

On Wednesday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal unveiled an action plan to "save the city" if another devastating wave strikes. The plan includes augmenting oxygen supplies and training 5,000 youth as health assistants to help doctors and nurses so that there is sufficient medical staff to handle the situation. "These youth will be trained in first aid, patient care, administering vaccinations, et cetera," Kejriwal said.

Many other states, including western Gujarat and southern Kerala are working to strengthen their health care infrastructure and vaccination drives to minimize the impact of a likely third wave that experts believe could hit the country in the next few months.

"Many people on the streets can be seen not following social distancing and wearing masks on their chins instead of covering their mouth and nose," New Delhi-based health columnist Archana Jyoti pointed out.

"Rapid vaccination against the virus appears to be the only solution in efforts to prevent another resurgence, but the coverage so far hasn't been encouraging" as only 5% of the country's adult population has been fully immunized, she told Nikkei Asia. In the U.K., by comparison, over half the adult population has reportedly been fully immunized.

As of June 15, India, which launched its inoculation drive in mid-January, had administered the first dose of the mandatory two-shot vaccine to 211.4 million people, while 49.1 million had received both doses by then. Given that the country has about 940 million people over the age of 18 eligible for vaccination, it needs to step up the effort in a big way.

The country is using two locally made vaccines, Covishield, supplied elsewhere under the AstraZeneca label and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India, and Covaxin, developed by Indian drugmaker Bharat Biotech. Russia's Sputnik V vaccine has also been approved for emergency use.

Starting June 21, all eligible Indian citizens can receive free vaccinations at government facilities nationwide.

"The pace of vaccination should see renewed energy from next week onward," Paul, the health ministry's adviser, said. "We look forward to [this] new phase in vaccine implementation [and] vaccine scaling up."

Singapore reports 935 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily case since last May ~ 17 Sep 2021
  • Of the new cases, 838 are in the community, 96 in migrant worker dormitories and the other one is an imported case.
  • Among the new cases, 241 are seniors who are above 60 years old. Total COVID-19 cases in the city-state at 75,783.
  • As of Sep 16, 82% of the local population has completed 2 doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and 84% has received at least 1 dose.
Covid-19: Expert 'surprised' by how quickly Singapore is nearing 1,000 daily cases ~ 17 Sep 2021
  • With daily cases fast approaching 1,000 in Singapore, it's the first time in this Covid-19 pandemic that the majority of new infections are from the community and not from the migrant worker dormitories. On Thursday (Sept 16), Singapore reported 803 cases in the community.
Home recovery for fully vaccinated COVID patients aged 12-69: MOH ~ 17 Sep 2021
  • Expanding the suitability criteria: From Saturday (Sep 18), home recovery will be the default care management model for fully vaccinated COVID-19 patients aged 12-69, who have no severe co-morbidities or illnesses, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Friday (Sep 17). Only those aged up to 50 were eligible previously.
  • These patients must be able to self-isolate in a room, preferably with an attached bathroom. In addition, they must not have household members who are more than 80 years old or are in one of the vulnerable groups – for example, pregnant individuals or those with weakened immune response.
  • Those who test positive for COVID and meet the above criteria can begin their home recovery immediately, without having to be conveyed to a hospital or community care facility.
Singapore's COVID-19 reproduction number is above 1. What does this mean and should we be concerned? ~ 17 Sep 2021
  • Lawrence Wong: "What is of concern to us is not just the absolute number of cases, but the rate at which the virus is spreading. And that’s the reproduction rate, or R," he said, warning about the likely "exponential rise" in cases.
  • "Currently, the R is more than 1. Cases are doubling every week. And if we continue on this trajectory of infection, it means we could have 1,000 (daily) cases in two weeks, or possibly 2,000 (daily) cases in a month."
  • Mr Wong said it was important to bring the R number down and avoid a large number of cases, as this would translate to a "sizeable" number of people getting seriously ill and eventually dying.
askST: If Singapore treats Covid-19 as endemic, can we view it like the common flu? ~ 7 Sep 2021
  • Q: If we treat Covid-19 as endemic, can it be thought of in the same way as the common flu?
  • A: No, it cannot. The knowledge of influenza - for instance, that flu viruses constantly change, so yearly vaccinations are recommended - has been built up over decades of scientific research.
  • "Whether Covid-19 will also become a seasonal human coronavirus, we don't know."
  • "It will possibly take a long time for us to observe the evolutions, to understand how this virus finally settles down in the human environment."

Travel ban loophole? Packages offering access to Singapore from India via third country spark Covid-19 concerns

26 April 2021
By Rainer

On any other day, a travel package offering people in India a trip to Singapore via Sri Lanka might not warrant a second look. But in the face of the recent travel ban that bars entry to those who have been in India in the past 14 days, these packages have become a cause of concern for locals.

A photo of a travel agency offering packages that connected India to Singapore via Sri Lanka was posted onto HardwareZone on Sunday night (April 25), immediately causing netizens to wonder if such a package was legal.

Meanwhile, a screenshot of an Indian national being offered assistance in entering Singapore via Sri Lanka was uploaded onto Facebook last Friday. The man was told that as long as he obtained a visa and stayed in Sri Lanka for two weeks, he would be allowed into Singapore. Another user was seen suggesting Nepal as another intermediary country.

Travel agency in Sri Lanka offers package for India-Sri Lanka-Singapore route

Former NMP Calvin Cheng similarly suggested taking a trip to the US and spending two weeks there as they do not have a mandatory quarantine, before flying to Singapore and serving a 14-day quarantine in a dedicated facility.

Calvin Cheng:

If you are a long-term pass holder of any nationality, now stranded in India, one of the easiest ways back to Singapore is through the US. For now.

Depending on your nationality, you might need a visa, but the US has no travel ban on flights originating from India, nor any quarantine policy. Take it as a holiday in the US.

You will then have to stay in the US for at least 14 days before applying for permission to return, like any Singapore long-term pass holder in the US would. Since there is no quarantine in the US, these 14 days should pass easily.

On your return, you would then quarantine for 14 days in a dedicated facility in Singapore, just like any other arrival from the US.

These posts sparked a discussion that a "loophole" was being exploited.

"All these people who exploit the loophole to enter the country should be banned permanently," an angry netizen wrote.

Others lambasted Cheng for "undermining the measures" put in place by the government and tagged several government bodies, such as the Ministry of Manpower and the Ministry of Health, for feedback.

In response to media queries regarding Indian nationals using the aforementioned methods to get past the border restrictions, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said the travel ban is not based on nationality.

"I think, as a matter of general infection control knowledge, regardless of your nationality, if you stay in a place long enough, you assume the risk profile of that place," he explained.

"You may be from another country, but once you stay in a new country for a while, you assume a new risk profile."

He added that by moving from a high-risk country to a lower-risk country and remaining Covid-negative before coming to Singapore, these people have already taken measures to lower the risk of virus transmission.

As of last Saturday (apr 24), all long-term pass holders and short-term visitors who have been to India within the last 14 days have been barred entry into Singapore. This includes visitors who transit in India, even if they had obtained prior approval for entry into Singapore.

This travel ban follows a massive surge in coronavirus cases in India that has seen hospitals across the country running out of beds and oxygen.

Noting that many arrivals from India work in the construction, marine and process sectors and live in dormitories, Lawrence Wong, the co-chair of the Covid-19 multi-ministry task force, said a new strain may get leaked into the dormitories, resulting in new clusters emerging again, hence the decision.

The "temporary freeze" on arrivals from India will give Singapore time to monitor the situation and better understand the "new variants that are there".

Dr. Raymond Yuen Death, Obituary ~ 12 Oct 2021
Obituary: With profound sadness we learn the tragic passing of Dr. Raymond Yuen on Monday 11th October 2021 at the age of 65 from Covid 19.

Passing of Dr Raymond Yuan due to Covid-19

By David Lam
October 11th, 2021

  • Maddie received her first injection on Dec. 30, 2020, and experienced mild adverse reactions of fever, tiredness, and swelling at the injection site that resolved within a couple of days. However, after getting her second dose on Jan. 20 2021, Maddie immediately felt pain at the injection site that didn’t occur with the first dose.
  • About 18 hours later, she developed “severe muscle/nerve pain, painful electrical shocks down her neck and spine which caused her to walk hunched over, severe chest pain that felt like her heart was being pulled out, numbness and swelling in her vaccine arm (left), her fingers and toes turned white and were ice cold to the touch, the pain in her toes was so bad she walked on her heels, severe abdominal pain (especially on [the] lower right side), and a fever of 101.4,” de Garay wrote.
  • Maddie’s condition did not improve, but worsened over the next two-and-a-half months, as she developed more symptoms, including not being able to walk; unable to feel below her waist; memory loss; loss of bladder control; the inability to swallow food and liquids, thus requiring a nasogastric feeding tube; and fainting or seizing 10 or more times per day.
  • For the past five months, de Garay said her daughter was taken to the emergency room nine times and “hospitalized three times for a total of two months in the hospital.” Maddie has also visited various specialists and received multiple therapies.

  • 前苏联在1979年发生的斯維爾德洛夫斯克炭疽洩漏事件:
  • Sverdlovsk anthrax leak: On 2 April 1979, spores of Bacillus anthracis were accidentally released from a Soviet military research facility in the city of Sverdlovsk, Russia. Going Viral: An interview with author Alina Chan on her new book about the origins of COVID-19 ~ 3 Dec 2021
  • It's hard to ask whether COVID originated in a lab without being shouted down or censored as a racist, a conspiracy theorist, or anti-science.
  • I ultimately committed to co-writing this book out of a sense of duty to the future. So that in the next 5 to 50 years, when another outbreak or pandemic of ambiguous origin occurs, I don’t kick myself for not doing more to push for a serious investigation of potential lab-based outbreaks.

Less than 1 COVID death a day in Japan as new cases plummet ~ 7 Dec 2021
  • The six confirmed deaths in Japan over the past week is the lowest it’s been in the country since July 2020, before the second wave of pandemic fatalities.
  • That slump parallels the collapse in reported cases, which are down from more than 25,000 a day in August to fewer than 200 a day every day for the past three weeks.
  • It’s unclear exactly why the wave of cases and deaths Japan faced in late summer and early fall has receded so dramatically.
  • A comprehensive vaccination campaign is at least partly responsible for the drop, with more than 77% of the nation’s 126 million residents fully inoculated as of Monday (Dec 6).
  • The vaccination rate among the vulnerable elderly is even higher, with 92% of those 65 years and older having received two shots.

Dr. John Campbell: Omicron, global exposure ~ 7 Dec 2021
