KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 — Bursa Malaysia is likely to trade favourably next week, boosted by the just announced 2019 Budget coupled with developments in the United States, said Bank Islam Chief Economist Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid.

He said the recent tweet by US President Donald Trump, although still highly uncertain, suggested that trade tension could take a breather.

On the foreign front, the unexpected happened. Trump has proposed a meeting with Xi prior to the G20 leaders summit in Buenos Aires (Nov 30 to Dec 1) plus a formal dinner with Xi after the summit (here).

Whether these 2 events could lead to a resolution of the trade war between the US and China remains to be seen, but the motivation behind them suggests that Trump has begun to walk back his belligerent policies towards China.

Once the relationship between both nations is on the mend, trades & investment will flow again. Global economy and stock market may be given a new leaf of life.   ;) :P :)

SINGAPORE: Malaysia’s state-owned oil company Petroliam Nasional Bhd’s balance sheet can absorb negative discretionary cash flows of RM40 billion for two years before headroom under its ‘aa’ stand-alone credit profile starts to reduce, S&P Global Ratings said in a report.

S&P said the company’s solid balance sheet, sizable net cash position and liquidity provide ample buffer against payment of a one-off dividend to govt that could reach RM30 billion.

“Impact of a one-off dividend of this size is moderate for Petronas’ cash position and balance sheet quality,” the rating agency said.

It can finance this dividend, given cash and short-term equivalent of nearly RM180 billion ringgit as of June 30, 2018, it added.

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 5): Following the clarity provided by the 2019 Budget announcement, analysts are projecting that the FBM KLCI will be able to breach the 1,800-point mark by year-end.

Malaysian Association of Technical Analysts (MATA) President Nik Mohd Ihsan Raja Abdullah said in general, analysts would now have a clearer picture about the country’s fiscal consolidation and the FBM KLCI should be able to recover from the current level of about 1,700 points and break the 1,800 level.

KUALA LUMPUR: The ongoing trade war between the US and China is turning Malaysian furniture makers more competitive than those in China, says Affin Hwang Capital Research.

It said local furniture manufacturer Poh Huat Resources Holdings Bhd 's revenue is expected to increase in FY19-20E on the back of strong furniture product demand, especially from the US.

The research house lifted its FY1920E core earnings for Poh Huat by 4.5%/3.4% due to stronger US demand, partly offset by rising production costs from higher raw material and labour costs.

It maintained its buy call on the counter with a higher target price of RM1.71.

The end/pause of the rally in US markets may be a good news for other global markets. In the past, when markets are not so correlated, a downtrend in US markets may co-exist with uptrend in other markets. These days, US market downturn tends to lead to downturn in other markets. However, since the US markets have moved up for so long while emerging markets, like Malaysia, have been trending sideways or downward in the past 2-3 years, we may see a break of the tight correlation between global markets. If so, it may lead to foreign funds coming back to the emerging markets, such as Malaysia. Let's wait and see.

With the tabling of Budget 2019 last Friday, Macquarie Equities Research (MQ Research) summarized what this means for Malaysian companies in their research report dated 3 November 2018. Key big-picture positives are the government’s commitment to asset disposals and related expansion in private sector participation.

MQ Research’s top picks include AirAsia, Inari and Telekom, among others.   :cash: :cash: :cash:

HLIB’s VIEW

On a quarterly basis, trade surplus was slightly lower at RM25.2bn (3Q17: RM26.3bn) which suggest external trade may have weighed on overall growth.

Going forward, we expect export growth to remain in expansionary mode, albeit at a slower pace.

The protracted trade disputes between US and PR China and the rising volatility in the financial market remain key downside risks.

Attack export counters ?  :shake: ;)

In Malaysia, Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd head of retail research Loui Low wrote in a brief today: "Tracking the positive overnight Wall Street performance, we anticipate that the buying support could spillover towards stocks on the local (Malaysia) front, refocusing on those bashed down and oversold stocks earlier on.

Meanwhile, budget beneficiaries such as insurance and healthcare-related may sustain its move over the near term."

"We may anticipate the FBM KLCI to perform a flag formation breakout, targeting 1,730. Meanwhile, support will be pegged around 1,690- 1,700," Low said.

Separately, Daim said national oil firm Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) can afford the RM30 billion special dividend to the government as announced in Budget 2019.

“The (Petronas) board would have studied this carefully. They would have alerted fund managers and rating agencies,” he said, adding that markets appear to have accepted this thus far.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government’s strategies have led Malaysia to be among the least vulnerable to risk looming the emerging markets, economists said.

They said the recent 2019 Budget illustrated the government’s credible and well-executed measures in strengthening the fiscal administration in terms of discipline and governance, restructuring of government debt and diversification of government revenue.

The economists viewed the measures as positive to keep the country less vulnerable to crisis.

Judging by the FBM KLCI’s gains of about 7.5 points between Monday and Thursday, despite the fall in the share prices of Genting, Genting Malaysia and Malaysia Airports, which blew off almost 12 index points on the FBM KLCI, the market can be said to be generally receptive of the Budget 2019.

What was good about the budget? Well, firstly, in an unsurprised move, there was no capital gains tax and neither was there inheritance tax – the two taxes feared by the market that would jeopardise investors’ interest on Bursa Malaysia and along with it, potential capital flight.
