Tobias Levkovich, chief U.S. equity strategist at Citi, who trimmed his 2019 target for the S&P 500 to 2,850 from 3,000, believes this is a good time to jump back into the market, in part given that stocks have the potential to rise 16% over the next 12 months on valuations alone.

FBMKLCI rebounded today with a gain of 9.4 points to close at 1679. From the weekly chart below, it looks like MACD is poised to cross above the MACD signal line to give the bullish MACD crossover. In addition, the elevated -DMI is beginning to turn downward while the depressed +DMI is beginning to turn upward. The elevated ADX, which confirms the strength of the preceding downtrend, is also beginning to turn downward. The last 2 times the index rebounded off the "uptrend line" with the similar MACD and ADX set-ups were in September 2011 and August 2015.

We may see a mild rally like August 2015 or a strong rally like September 2011.

4. Stocks look cheap

S&P 500 stocks traded as high as 24 times trailing earnings last year, putting them the top fifth of the valuation range since 1990. Recently, they fell to the bottom fifth of that range, or about 16 times trailing earnings, points out Paulsen.

After the worst December for stocks since the Great Depression, investors are hoping that the market’s history of outsize returns in January will help put the market on track for healthy gains for the remainder of the year.

•Despite the lingering undervaluation among the lower liners with the FBM Small Cap index’s PERs at 10.7x and 9.3x for 2018 and 2019 respectively, we think the strong recovery prospects remain subdued as sentiments on the lower liners are still thin amid the ongoing market uncertainty. The recent recovery is welcomed, but with most players remaining wary of the market’s direction, the recovery could be muted and short lived, in our view.

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 1): AllianceDBS Research said despite the challenging economic environment, an economic recession is unlikely for Malaysia, given its relatively healthy economic growth and strong liquidity.

In a strategy note Jan 31, the research house said that additional selling pressure by foreigners would be subdued given the relatively low foreign shareholdings estimated at 23%.

“There is also ample liquidity in the market as our equity market/M2 has reached a compelling level last seen only in 2009, implying limited downside,” it said.

Emerging markets (EMs) and Asia are still favoured investment destinations for their relatively better growth and valuation metrics compared with developed markets such as the US and Europe, says Lee Sook Yee, chief investment officer at Kenanga Investors Bhd.

“Stock markets in Asia and EMs offer higher earnings growth and are trading at lower price-earnings ratios (PERs) than those in the US,” she adds.

According to Bloomberg data, the earnings growth of the MSCI Emerging Markets Index (three to five years) was 14.7% while its PER was 12.3 times as at Jan 29. In contrast, the earnings growth of the S&P 500 was 10.6% while its PER was 17.9 times.
